Transcription of a 1915 - 1919 diary written by my husband's grandmother Ada May (Grimshaw) Illingworth who lived in Springfield, Vermont.
It sounds like they were either reading the books by Wm. Dean Howells about Altruria, or hearing lectures by someone talking about the actual Altruria in California. A Traveler from Altruria is a novel like Tappan Wright's Islandia. It compares American standards of work ethic, politeness and daily living to those of a faraway island utopia called Altruria. There are several sequels. The real Altruria was a community founded by a Unitarian minister in 1894 based on the books.
