Transcription of a 1915 - 1919 diary written by my husband's grandmother Ada May (Grimshaw) Illingworth who lived in Springfield, Vermont.
Good heavens!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Ada was very saddened by this but in her short entries, she appears very matter of fact. Perhaps people were stronger and more hardened to tragic events back then.
ReplyDeleteGrrrrrrrrrrr. Just posted a long response that apparently got erased! Here we go again.
ReplyDeleteIt's not unusual for Ada to write something loaded like this followed by a comment on a movie she saw at the Ideal. Sometimes it's hard to know how to interpret her lack of emotion. Unexpected death was certainly more common then but there are places in the diary where she is clearly more upset. It's possible I suppose that for some of the entries she only knew the people marginally, read about it in the paper and is recording it.
it makes for some unsettling reading sometimes though.
Poor Mabel Perry!
