Transcription of a 1915 - 1919 diary written by my husband's grandmother Ada May (Grimshaw) Illingworth who lived in Springfield, Vermont.
I don't recall Ella mentioning a coal shortage--but then, they were probably burning wood. Is Ada May Brian's grandmother, or great-grandmother? Ella would be my great-grandmother, given her dates.
ReplyDeleteActually, I take it back. On January 17, 1918, Ella wrote Thurs 17 "Rather mild. Mack sends coal to last the winter, out 20 tons all told." And in October, 1918, she mentioned the "first coal fire."
ReplyDeleteAda is Brian's grandmother but she died in the early 50s before he was born. Ada had Joanne (his mom) later than most. She lost a baby in 1920 and Joanne was born in 1922 when Ada was 39.
ReplyDeleteI was actually a little surprised to hear that Ada and Ernest burned coal - I just assumed a wood stove, I guess, although maybe in town coal was more common.
Now I'm surprised to hear that Ella did.
